Gold One Suspends Ezulwini Employees

Submitted by on October 5, 2012 – 9:51 AMNo Comment

South Africa-focused gold miner Gold One has taken decisive steps against striking workers at its Ezulwini operation, issuing suspension notices to illegally striking workers.

Earlier this week, the Labour Court granted Gold One an interdict against the strike at its Cooke 4 shaft, declaring the industrial action at Ezulwini unprotected and unlawful.

The court ruling also interdicted workers from participating in further industrial action.

“I am disappointed that despite numerous requests to return to work, both before and after the award of the interdict, our employees have chosen to be in contempt of court and are acting without any regard for the rule of law,” said Gold One president and CEO Neal Froneman on Thursday.

“We are, therefore, without any option but to suspend these striking employees.”

Froneman noted that the South African Police Service was maintaining a strong presence at the operation to ensure that there were no acts of intimidation or violence.
